52 Quilters - Week 27 - Fiona Forsyth - My Gallery of Quilts

Today I thought that I would share some of my quilts with you.  I only have a few larger sized quilts which are finished, so I have selected a sample to share with you.  I enjoy machine sewing; foundation paper piecing; hand sewing; needle turn applique; English Paper Piecing (EPP); and embroidery.  I am still not confident in Free Motion Quilting so most of my quilts have been hand quilted. A few I have had professionally quilted by Linda at Ladybug Quilting in Bendigo.

Please click on the links to see more information about each.  Quilts appear in no particular date order...

Although not a quilt, I couldn't resist sharing my one and only bag with you.  The pattern is "Hearts & Happy Flowers Bag" by Leanne's House.  The front panels are hand embroidered and it is made from various Lecien fabrics and the "Hearts & Happy Flowers" fabric range by Leanne Beasley for Ella Blue Fabrics.

Millefiori Photo Shoot in Maldon

On the 10th of September I drove down to the historic old town of Maldon with my friend Jenny to visit the local patchwork shop.  I had recently finished hand quilting my Millefiori Mystery Quilt and as it was freshly washed and pressed, I decided to take it along with us for some photos.

Outside the patchwork shop - it was too difficult taking photos in the main street.

So we enjoyed lunch at Cafe Maldon and decided on another tactic
Devonshire Tea for two at Cafe Maldon
As we walked back to the car down a little lane way, I saw this rustic corrugated iron fence...

As we left Maldon and drove back to Bendigo, I spotted this quaint old truck at a property called "Gumtree Hollow". I slammed on the breaks and we jumped out to take some more photos:

Quilt details:
Millefiori Mystery Quilt.  Pattern & fabric range by Sarah Fielke.  The pattern was released as a block of the week exclusive to Spotlight stores Australia.  I made the top late last year. The back of the quilt has been made using a Drunkards Path template with left over Millefiori fabric.  I made the back earlier this year and hand quilted it with Perle 8 thread during winter 2015.

Mystery Quilt "Millefiori" with Sarah Fielke

My latest quilt top finish is the Millefiori Mystery Quilt by Sarah Fielke

This quilt pattern was released over a 12-weeks period via the Spotlight Facebook page & the Spotlight website.  Each week you could download a free PDF file containing instructions on how to make that week's block/s.  As this quilt was a mystery, the picture of the finished quilt was not released until the end.  I waited until it was all released before I purchased the fabric and eventually started to make it only a few weeks ago.  I have included links to the pattern at the bottom of this article if you wish to download them.

The quilt finishes at 80", which is about 2m square, so it is suitable for a large single bed, a double bed, or a large throw. There is an option to add an 8" border to the quilt to turn it into a queen size, however I haven't decided if I will enlarge it yet.

This quilt contains applique.  I chose to do hand needle turn applique instead of machine applique or fusible hand applique.

Personally I prefer hand needle turned applique.
My thread of choice is Superior Threads "Bottom Line" 60wt polyester thread.  I have 2 neutrals on reels (colours 619 & 623) and I recently purchased a "Super Bobs Donut" which holds 118 yards of each of the 35 colours.

The fabrics used in this quilt are from Sarah Fielke's "Millefiori" fabric range which was released in October 2013.  Within Australia and New Zealand, these fabrics are exclusively sold through Spotlight stores.  If you live outside of Australia the fabric (if still available) can be purchased directly from Sarah Fielke via her website.

I thoroughly enjoyed making this quilt top!  Now I just have to design a back for it and hand quilt it.  My goal is to have this quilt completed by Australian Winter 2015.

This made my day; when I posted a photograph of the finished top on Instagram, Sarah Fielke "liked" my photo! ☺️  Talk about making my head swell!
